Introduction
We are partnering with a global advisory firm to appoint a Business Development Director based in Tokyo. This is a senior, client-facing role focused on expanding the firm’s presence in Japan by building strong client relationships and driving new business opportunities across both domestic and international markets.
About the Role
This position sits within the Business Development function and plays a critical role in driving revenue growth through a combination of new client acquisition and expansion of existing relationships. The role is highly external-facing and success will be measured by the ability to originate and convert business opportunities.
While the role is based in Tokyo, it offers exposure to global clients and collaboration with international teams, making it well-suited for candidates with a cross-border mindset and experience.
Responsibilities
Business Development & Opportunity Creation
- Identify, originate, and develop new business opportunities with prospective clients
- Design and execute strategic initiatives to generate revenue and expand market presence
- Proactively engage with senior stakeholders through meetings, events, and targeted outreach
- Collaborate with senior leadership to access and build relationships with new clients
- Drive end-to-end business development activities, from initial outreach through to deal conversion
Client Relationship Management
- Manage and grow relationships with existing clients to ensure long-term engagement
- Identify opportunities for repeat business and cross-selling of services
- Re-engage dormant clients and generate renewed interest in potential projects
- Support project teams in managing client expectations and communicating deliverables effectively
Requirements
- Proven track record of generating new business and managing senior client relationships
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to influence at executive level
- Fluency in English; Japanese language capability is advantageous
- Self-starter with the ability to work independently and across global teams
- Experience in a client-facing role within professional services such as consulting, investment banking, legal, policy, or advisory environments is preferred
- Familiarity with the Japanese market or experience working with Japanese clients is highly desirable
