We are seeking an experienced communications leader to join a leading consumer brand as Vice President of Communications. This senior leadership role is responsible for shaping both internal and external communications, strengthening the brand’s reputation in Japan, and ensuring alignment with global communications strategy.
About the Role
As Vice President of Communications, you will drive the company’s narrative during an important stage of growth and transformation. Reporting to the Senior Vice President of Marketing and collaborating with executive leadership, you will lead a team of six to enhance employee engagement, cultural cohesion, and external visibility. This role requires a strategic yet hands-on leader who can influence stakeholders, inspire teams, and build meaningful connections with both employees and the public.
Responsibilities
- Communications Strategy: Develop and execute integrated communication strategies that align with brand values and business priorities. Provide strategic counsel to senior leaders and ensure consistency across global and local communications.
- Internal Communications: Lead initiatives that engage employees, reinforce company culture, and communicate key changes clearly and effectively.
- External Communications & Media Relations: Oversee media relations, public announcements, brand storytelling, and executive visibility. Serve as spokesperson or prepare senior leaders for external engagements. Proactively manage issues and safeguard the company’s reputation.
- Team Leadership & Development: Manage, coach, and grow a team of six. Drive succession planning and build a collaborative, high-performance culture.
- Stakeholder Engagement: Partner with Marketing, Operations, Legal, and other departments to ensure unified messaging. Build strong relationships with media, industry, and government stakeholders. Oversee external PR agencies and vendors.
Requirements
- Japanese national with experience in leading consumer-facing industries such as retail, beauty, apparel, or consumer goods.
- 12+ years in communications, PR, or corporate affairs, covering both internal and external communications.
- Proven leadership experience managing teams of five or more, with demonstrated success in developing talent.
- Native-level Japanese and business-level English skills.
- Strong track record in crisis and issues management.
- Skilled at navigating Japanese corporate culture and working within global matrix organizations.
Preferred Qualifications
- Background in retail, consumer goods, lifestyle, or hospitality industries.
- Established network within Japanese media and external affairs.
- Experience working in multinational companies with cross-cultural collaboration.
- Advanced degree in Communications, Business, or a related field.
