A Wonderful Night of Reunion and Celebration
On June 25, 2026, Makana Partners successfully hosted its first major milestone event. It was a very special evening dedicated to celebrating the release of the highly anticipated book, "The Hardest Market in the World: An Insider's Guide to Winning the War for Talent in Japan," written by our very own Managing Director, Yan Sen Lu.
The evening brought together around 70 business leaders, HR professionals, and industry experts. From the very beginning, the room was filled with great energy and a wonderful ambiance. Many guests shared that the gathering felt less like a formal corporate meeting and more like a warm, joyful "reunion." It was a fantastic opportunity for old friends to catch up and for new professional connections to begin.
During the event, Yan Sen Lu took the stage to share his deep insights, personal experiences, and unique perspectives on the recruitment industry in Japan. He also took a proud moment to introduce Makana Partners' refreshed and growing team of consultants, highlighting our commitment to supporting businesses in this unique market.
Key Discussion Topics from the Presentation
The event featured very educational presentations and a lively panel discussion about how Japan's workplace culture is changing. Here are the main topics and key takeaways discussed during the presentations:
Current Labor Market Trends in Japan: Professor Hiroshi Ono from Hitotsubashi University Business School opened the discussion by looking at Japan’s changing demographics. Because the population is shrinking and aging rapidly, the total number of available workers is dropping. As a result, raising individual productivity and improving the quality of human capital have become the most urgent economic goals for companies in Japan today.
- The Big Shift from "Make" to "Buy": An amazing milestone was reached in 2026—for the first time ever, the number of mid-career hires in Japan officially passed the number of new university graduate hires. This means companies are changing their traditional models. Instead of hiring young graduates and training them over many years ("make"), businesses are now actively hiring experienced professionals who have immediate, practical skills ("buy").
- The Powerful Impact of AI on Talent: Technology is moving faster than ever, which means technical skills can become outdated very quickly. Because of this, continuous learning and "reskilling" are now essential for career growth. While AI helps increase personal productivity and gives workers more freedom, the speakers emphasized that building "social capital"—strong, trust-based human relationships inside and outside the office—is more valuable today than it has ever been.
- Modern Leadership Development: Professor Jody Ono from Hitotsubashi University shared valuable research on what the younger generation looks for in leadership. Young professionals today want workplaces that protect human dignity. They thrive in environments where they can learn from their mistakes without feeling ashamed, and where true compassion goes hand-in-hand with business efficiency.
- The Book’s Core Playbook: Yan Sen Lu explained how his book serves as a practical guide to mastering Japan’s difficult talent market. The book is organized into three clear sections: The Landscape (understanding the history and current market), The Playbook (recruitment strategies based on deep relationships and trust), and The Long Game (focusing on the future of hiring, AI, and how to help new leaders succeed in their first 90 days).
